The Objective
The Ericsson ‘Greening India’ Campaign, in association with India Immersion Centre, Global Adjustments, is an initiative to spread awareness among the school-going generation on recycling waste, particularly sensitising them to the relatively new phenomenon of digital waste.

Goal is
to reach out to over 15,000 students in schools around the city of Chennai, over a period of one month, creating a movement that they can take home with them.

Synopsis of the Initiative

Launched at Global Adjustments’ 13th Annual Beautiful India Expatriate Photo Competition, on the theme of ‘Beautiful India Goes Green’, the campaign will begin with a shortlist of 30 schools from within the city of Chennai. Expatriates from over 10 different nationalities, who participated in the photo competition’s cultural programme on the five elements of nature, will visit these schools and interact with students from Grade 9 and 11. Students, divided into teams of ten, will be encouraged to adopt one green initiative for the month, based on the feasibility of the ideas presented by the students in an open forum. Once decided, the campaign has officially begun.

The 10 expat volunteers will conduct spot checks on these schools and gauge the commitment and responsibility displayed. They will then select 10 schools, based on the levels of success achieved. The ten schools will then present their projects to a panel of judges, who will pick three winners for the cash prize of Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. All ten finalists will be invited to visit the R & D facility at Ericsson for insightful interactions with the staff at Ericsson.

Outcome of Initiative
The initiative hopes to create a movement of change, through the medium of a meaningful competition. By sensitising students to the effects of climate change and encouraging them to effect a solution by themselves, the Greening India campaign seeks to build a community of future citizens who will believe in one of Gandhiji’s most famous sayings: Be the change you want to see in the world. For one month, they would have just done that.
